서울특별시에서는 2012년 10월 신청사 개청 이후, 공감과 경청의 문화청사 조성을 목표로 시민과 함께하는 다양한 전시 프로그램을 운영하고 있으며, 올해는 일상 속 다양한 미디어아트 경험 기회를 제공하고자 ‘2024 서울시청 미디어아트 공모전’을 개최하였습니다.
공모전 당선자 중 첫 번째로 전시에 참여하는 전민제 작가는 데이터 매개자로서 데이터를 일상을 기록하는 예술창작의 도구로 사용해오고 있습니다. 전시 <서울 아이콘> 시리즈는 각각의 제목 <동행>, <매력>, <안전> 이라는 서울시의 핵심 키워드들을 담고 있습니다.
작가는 서울시의 비전과 계획이 담긴 다양한 문서를 수집하고, 그 데이터를 인공지능과 협력적으로 분석하여 다채로운 비주얼과 사운드를 만들었습니다. 개별 작품은 역동성 있는 데이터를 기반으로 예술적으로 생동감 있게 표현되고 있으며 이를 통해 서울시가 제안하는 방향성과 꿈이 담겨있는 미래의 모습을 상상해보기를 기대합니다.
Since the opening of the new government building in October 2012, Seoul Metropolitan City has been organizing various exhibition programs in collaboration with citizens, aimed at transforming it into a cultural space for empathy and communication. This year, it has launched the “2024 Seoul City Hall Media Art Competition” to provide the public with the opportunity to experience various forms of media art in their everyday life.
Jeon Minje, the first of the winners to participate in the exhibition, acts as a Data Remediator, using data as an artistic tool to record everyday life. His Seoul Icon series embodies key concepts of Seoul City’s vision— Companionship, Attraction, and Safety—through artworks bearing these titles.
The artist has collected various documents outlining Seoul Metropolitan City’s plans and visions and, in collaboration with artificial intelligence, analyzed this data to create vibrant visuals and sounds. Each based on dynamic data, all of his works are vivid artistic expressions, which we hope will encourage viewers to envision a future that aligns with Seoul City’s goals and dreams.

데이터 매개자, 전민제의 작품 세계에서 데이터는 일상을 기록하는 예술적 도구이자 창작의 근간입니다. 그는 대량의 데이터를 수집하고 분석하며 사회의 이면을 포착하고, 이를 드러내기 위해 뉴 미디어, 영상, 설치, 사운드, 회화, 조각 등 다채로운 장르와 실험적 기법을 활용합니다.
이는 데이터의 다층적 속성을 표현하는 방법이기도 합니다. 궁극적으로 그의 작업은 데이터를 예술로 재해석하여 우리가 간과한 세계의 이면을 발견하고 새로운 관점을 제시하는 과정입니다.
Jeon Minje
In the artistic world of Jeon Minje, a self-described Data Remediator, data is not only an artistic tool for recording daily life but the very foundation of his creative process. He collects and analyzes vast amounts of data to uncover hidden aspects of society, bringing them to light through experimental techniques and diverse artistic genres, including new media, video, installation, sound, painting, and sculpture.
This approach also serves to express the multifaceted nature of data. In essence, his work represents a process of reinterpreting data as a form of art, aiming to explore overlooked aspects of the world and offer fresh perspectives.

The works featured in this exhibition, Seoul Icon: Companionship, Seoul Icon: Attraction, and Seoul Icon: Safety, are AI-generated videos that capture the visions of Seoul Metropolitan City. These pieces, centered around the key slogans of the 8th popularly elected Seoul Metropolitan Government—Companionship, Attraction, and Safety—are based on data from related reports and policy implementation plans.
As the titles of the works suggest, this series seeks to provide a vivid and artistic portrayal of Seoul’s envisioned future and its vibrant dynamics from the perspectives of companionship, attraction, and safety.
